The short version

What goes into a Leal's slab foundation?

A Leal's slab foundation is a poured concrete pad built to carry a house, a shop, a barn or a piece of equipment, and every one starts the same way in Granbury, TX: with the ground. Santos and his crew set wood forms to the shape of the pad, grade the base inside them, and lay a vapor barrier and a rebar grid before any concrete shows up. Then the pour goes in, and the crew screeds, floats and finishes it, running a walk-behind or ride-on power trowel on the bigger slabs. Because Leal's is a concrete and welding crew under one roof, the slab can be planned around whatever goes on top of it, whether that is a wood frame, a metal building kit or a welded red-iron frame. You get one crew from the first stake to the last trowel pass, and one number to call about it. The same steps cover a large house foundation and a small pad out back.

How a slab gets built

Four steps from bare ground to a finished slab

These photos come from Leal's own jobs around Hood County and the surrounding area. The order is the same on every slab.

  1. Leal's crew setting wood forms and grading for a backyard slab

    Forms and grade

The crew sets wood forms to the exact outline of the slab and works the ground inside them to grade. A pad is only as good as the dirt it sits on, so this step gets the time it needs.

  2. Rebar laid over a vapor barrier inside slab forms before the pour

    Rebar and base

A vapor barrier goes down and a rebar grid is laid across the formed slab. Rebar and base go into every slab Leal's pours, and you can see both in the photo before any concrete is placed.

  3. Large formed foundation slab poured on a cut hillside near Granbury

    The pour

With the forms checked and the metal in place, the concrete goes in and gets worked out to the edges. Even a pad cut into a hillside gets poured as one formed slab.

  4. Leal's crew floating and edging a freshly poured concrete slab

    Finish

The crew floats and edges the surface by hand and brings in the power trowel on larger pads. Santos keeps you posted along the way, and the site gets cleaned up when the crew leaves.

Slab plus metal

Pour the slab, then weld the building on it

Many of the slabs Leal's pours carry a weld-up building: a red-iron shop, a carport, a lean-to over an RV pad. That is where having two trades in one crew pays off. The people forming your pad know what is going to stand on it, and the same crew can weld the frame once the concrete is ready.

Already have a building kit or a plan from someone else? The slab is a job on its own, and we can pour it either way.

From a shop pad customer

“Santos and his crew did outstanding work on a concrete shop pad for us. They worked fast and efficiently. The finished pad is a beauty. Santos kept us in the loop throughout the process and made sure the job site was cleaned up perfectly when they left. We will definitely be calling him back for any future construction needs.”

Slab questions

Foundation and shop slab FAQ

What affects the price of a slab?

The size of the slab is the biggest driver, followed by how much ground work the lot needs, whether the pad is flat or cut into a slope, and how much access the crew has. A small pad and a full house foundation in Granbury are very different jobs. Tell us what you are building and we will give you a quote.

How do you prepare the ground on an uneven or rocky lot?

Leal's grades the area inside the forms before anything is poured, and that includes sloped ground. One slab in our photos was formed on a cut hillside. Uneven or rocky Granbury lots take more ground work, which is one reason we like to see the site before quoting a foundation or shop slab.

What can the slab hold, and do you add rebar?

Rebar and a prepared base go into every slab Leal's pours, as the photos on this page show. We pour slabs for houses, shops, barns, RV and equipment pads, so tell us what will sit on yours, whether that is a truck, a trailer or a machine, and we will plan the pad around it.

What areas do you pour in?

Leal's is based in Granbury, TX and pours foundations and shop slabs in Granbury, Weatherford, Stephenville, Cleburne, Glen Rose, Joshua and Fort Worth. If your lot is somewhere in that range, send us the address details when you ask for a quote and we will tell you if it fits.

Can you pour the slab for a metal building kit or a weld-up building?

Yes. Leal's pours slabs for metal building kits and for weld-up buildings, and our crew can weld the frame on a slab we poured. Give us the building size and where it will sit in Granbury or nearby, and we will plan the pad to match it.
